The Payroll Specialist position, part of the Finance team, provides a critical role managing semi-monthly payroll. The role includes ongoing interaction with the HR team updating new hire data, status changes and terminations. Time and attendance tracking is required in order to process payroll. Development of ad hoc financial and operational reporting, weekly distribution of reports and all annual reporting including W-2, W-2c, 1095 is managed in conjunction with the Finance Department team. The Payroll Specialist engages with team members at all levels in the company and must maintain confidentiality of accessible data.

This position is based out of our Headquarters office, located in Oakland, with flexible scheduling.

Essential Functions

  • Understand all aspects of payroll in regard to payroll laws and regulations
  • Planning, implementation of a new payroll platform experience preferred
  • Manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed timely and accurately
  • Provide excellent customer service to employees: in the areas of compensation, taxes, benefits, how to clock in/out, how to request time off and how to change benefits
  • Perform daily payroll operations
  • Develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as needed
  • Create and run audit reports as required
  • Process manual checks


  • 4-5 years’ experience in payroll processing including a strong knowledge of Federal and State regulations
  • Working knowledge of payroll best practices
  • Expert proficiency in payroll platforms such as ADP, Paylocity, Payentry etc.
  • Strong ability to execute work with all levels in the company including confidential executive interaction with a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens
  • Advanced Microsoft Office; ability to design and edit financial and graphic presentations and materials
  • Capability to independently balance priorities while maintaining a focus on detail and productivity. Manage immediate and unexpected deadlines in a demanding high volume environment
